Elke werkdag een talkshow maken, het zal je lot zijn. Bovendien niet geënt op luchtige satire of vermaak, maar met de ‘actualiteit’ als vertrekpunt. In al die jaren Pauw en Witteman waren er natuurlijk een paar sterke onderwerpen en gasten. Maar de middelmaat, als resultaat van het juk van de alledaagsheid, nekt het praatprogramma. De gasten van Pauw en Witteman bevinden zich dikwijls aan de oevers van de vijver, waar het onderwerp als steen in die vijver fungeert. Van een afstand, vaak halfslachtig observerend, kan men een mening delen. Bij DWDD is dat nog erger; Henk Bleker die iets vindt van het populaire Boer Zoekt Vrouw, willekeurige BN’ers die hun ‘favoriete acteur’ selecteren en Jort Kelder en Jan Mulder die iets geloofwaardigs over politiek menen te zeggen. Een korte analyse van de vijver.
Wie naar het lijstje gasten van Pauw en Witteman van het de afgelopen seizoenen kijkt, constateert dat er wat hotshots tussen zitten. Soms krijgt een zeer bijzondere gast ruim baan en hoeft hij of zij de tijd niet te delen met een sporter of een acteur; een voorrecht voor premiers (Rutte, Balkenende), ontheemde bankiers (Dirk Scheringa) of politici met een groter verhaal (Halsema bij haar vertrek). Maar vaak is het sappelen. Dan wordt een kopstuk ingevlogen om iets te vinden of te duiden, zonder dat je gelijk een link met die persoon ziet. De buitenlandwoordvoerder van de PvdA, Frans Timmermans, zegt iets over Egypte (uitzending 11 februari 2011). Rita Verdonk zegt iets over de verkiezingen van de Provinciale Staten (uitzending 1 maart 2011).
Nu kunnen we voorzichtig concluderen dat Egypte en de verkiezingen getuigen van een gevoel voor enige urgentie. Maar waarop is de keuze voor dergelijke personen gebaseerd? Is Frans Timmermans, de sympathieke voormalige staatssecretaris voor Europese Zaken, een ‘Egypte’-kenner? Wat is de meerwaarde om te weten wat deze man vertelt over Egypte? Wie in de archieven van het programma duikt, ziet dat Timmermans meer dan eens is langsgekomen om ergens iets over te vertellen. De man kan boeiend vertellen, maar welke krachten moeten we een orakel toeschrijven dat hij tien keer in een seizoen kan langskomen? Het is een boude uitspraak, maar Frans Timmermans spreekt aan de oevers van de vijver en ziet net zoveel kringen in het water als u en ik met een beetje research. Laat staan wat Rita Verdonk zou kunnen vertellen over de Provinciale Staten.
Het kan ook de andere kant op; men neme een klein onderwerp en diept het uit en suggereert dat het een grote kwestie is die het wereldnieuws zou moeten domineren. Of het nu om orka’s in een dolfinarium of zwangere vrouwen op leeftijd gaat. De case in het laatste geval was een vrouw uit Harlingen die met haar 62 jaar na een medisch circus nog zwanger werd. Gast aan tafel (15 februari 2011) om er iets van te vinden: Patricia Paay. De redactie van Pauw en Witteman fingeert een trend die er niet is. Wordt ons land nu bevolkt door barende oma’s? Het is volledig uit de lucht gegrepen. Je kunt er een ethische discussie over voeren, maar moet dat op borrelniveau met een BN’er als Paay, die vooral bekend is van Paay zijn? Op dat moment gooien Pauw en Witteman hun eigen steen in de vijver en creëren kringen en hebben er dus altijd wel een expert bij die de kringen duidt.
Een stap verder is de steen in de vijver met stilstaand stinkend water. Dat gebeurt wanneer DWDD een gebbetje doet van het kaliber ‘De favoriete… van een bn’er.’ Of het nu een favoriete gitaarsolo, acteur of actrice is; vraag een advocaat, soapacteur en een quizmaster wat ze lekker of leuk vinden, laat ultrakorte fragmenten tussendoor zien en je bent weer vijf minuten verder.
Ik heb overigens ooit geprobeerd zo’n steen in de vijver te gooien, met bijbehorende expert; met succes. Met twee vrienden beheerde ik het online videokanaal tunnelvisie.tv met korte, satirische filmpjes. Mijn oom Bert van Aalten had in een verleden (begin jaren tachtig!) een carnavalshit met ‘Een Barg Die He Un Krul In De Steert’, als De Aal. We bedachten dat hij maar zijn eigen (gefingeerde) realityshow moest krijgen op ons videokanaal. We draaiden een paar scènes, stelden een persbericht op en raakten de juiste redactie-inboxen van het mediapark. Zo kwam De Aal bij DWDD terecht, waar Van Nieuwkerk en Kelder niet goed raad wisten met mijn oom. ‘U lijkt wel een man die bij een bank had kunnen werken’, verzuchtte Kelder (mijn oom is tandarts te Laren). We gebruikten het verschijnen van De Aal in DWDD natuurlijk weer. Zo ontstond er een metaniveau van media-aandacht – met dat bijltje had ik vaker gehakt toen ik kwam opdraven in een surrealistisch decor van Tijd Voor Tien (Talpa) om te vertellen over fictie voor smartphones (een ‘movel’).
Het maakt uiteindelijk niet zoveel uit; creëer een vijver, verzin je eigen stenen en werpen maar. De kans is best groot dat je het nog eens tot een talkshow schopt.
